(CNN) — When Barbara Brigham was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2020, the odds were not in her favor.Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies, fatal in 88% of patients. It is also one of the hardest to treat. Tumors can be surgically removed, but they come back within seven to nine months in 90% of patients. Chemotherapy can help prolong life, but it too is rarely a cure. Radiation, immunotherapy and targeted therapies also don’t work.Today, nearly three years after her diagnosis, Brigham says regular scans find no trace of cancer in her pancreas. She credits an experimental therapy — a personalized cancer vaccine — being tested by BioNTech, one of the companies that helped make the mRNA vaccines for Covid-19.Brigham was one of 16 participants in a recent test of the new technology. The results of the study were published Wednesday in the journal Nature.Half of patients respondedOf the 16 patients who were able to complete all p...Steamy Sunshine Late Week

The stretch of beautiful and mostly dry weather conditions rolls on this Thursday across South Florida with high pressure remaining in first control of our pattern. Expect a few passing clouds with only a stray shower paired with an onshore breeze and high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. It won’t be as hot as yesterday when Miami hit 91F but temperatures will still be above average.Meanwhile, a weakening front will approach from the north and east later today and this will help increase our rain chances slightly for Friday. Therefore, a few spotty showers will be possible during the day on Friday. Most areas will still remain dry, however, with a mix of sun and clouds paired with highs still in the mid to upper 80s. It will also turn breezy on Friday with gusts up to 25 mph along the coast, leading to rip current concerns and more hazardous marine conditions. Now by the Mother’s Day holiday weekend, we’ll be watching a mid to upper level low approaching South ...Restaurant review: Nightshop

Rue de Flandre 167What’s good: Drinks, drinks, drinks! Follow the staff’s recommendations and pair your food with a blended beer from Swiss brewery À tue-tête. If beer isn’t your thing, no worries; Nightshop is also a natural wine bar in between dining services, and it offers a vast selection. For the starter, we recommend the crispy artichoke and aioli, which features a couple of carefully cooked artichokes with immaculate texture, paired with a light but flavorful and oily aioli sauce. For veggies, the coffee-roasted carrots, ricotta and pangrattato is an incredible choice. The balance of flavor between the rich coffee taste and the tinge of sweetness from the seared carrots makes the simple but creative dish incredible. For carnivores, the menu’s star — Champagne sausage in bean purée — is even more delicious than it sounds. The sausage is perfectly cooked, juicy and packed with flavor. The creamy bean purée complements the sausage perfectly. It also comes with an artic...Tory Brexiteers split as UK cancels its EU law bonfire night

LONDON — There’s a new Brexit split in the U.K.’s Conservative Party. For years the governing Tories were bitterly divided between Brexiteers and Remainers. But a fresh row over a plan to repeal EU laws shows that the new battle is between two Euroskeptic camps: die-hards and compromisers. The rift was on clear display Thursday as Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch fielded questions on the latest government U-turn in the House of Commons.Badenoch’s department announced this week that it will pump the brakes on the much-hyped Retained EU Law Bill, which set out a strict timetable for replacing or removing thousands of EU laws from the U.K. statute book. The legislation originally contained a “sunset clause” which, in December this year, would have automatically deleted every EU law which hadn’t already been reviewed by the government — a veritable Brexit bonfire, but one which spooked some businesses fearing a regulatory nightmare. Badenoch has now amended the bill so that on...Biden says he visited Northern Ireland ‘to make sure the Brits didn’t screw around’

DUBLIN — Joe Biden said he traveled to Northern Ireland last month “to make sure the Brits didn’t screw around” with the region’s peace process — a blunt take that drew gasps from U.K. and unionist politicians. The remarks, contained in a White House transcript of the U.S. president’s remarks at a Democratic Party fundraiser, clash with his carefully worded speech April 12 in Belfast marking the 25th anniversary of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord. Biden started his four-day visit throughout the island of Ireland in the Northern Irish capital, where tensions over post-Brexit trade rules have torn apart the region’s unity government.According to the transcript, Biden told party supporters at a private New York residence that he had visited Belfast “to make sure they weren’t — the Brits didn’t screw around and Northern Ireland didn’t walk away from their commitments.”Those words drew predictable fire from the Democratic Unionists, the main pro-British party in Northern Irelan...No injuries reported after crews respond to ‘underground explosion’ that shattered windows, damaged roadway in Somerville

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Lawyers in a First Amendment lawsuit that pits a New Hampshire bakery owner against a town zoning ordinance over a large painting of doughnuts and other pastries are hoping that a judge can resolve the matter after voters didn’t.“Unfortunately the saga isn’t over yet,” bakery owner Sean Young said. Both sides “agree that they will have to litigate this controversy,” according to a joint statement filed late Wednesday in federal court.Last year, high school art students covered the big blank wall above Leavitt’s Country Bakery in Conway with a painting of the sun shining over a mountain range made of sprinkle-covered chocolate and strawberry doughnuts, a blueberry muffin, a cinnamon roll and other pastries. But the town zoning board decided that the painting was not so much art as advertising, and so could not remain as is because of its size. At about 90 square feet (8.6 square meters), it’s four times bigger than the local sign code allows.Faced...Latest news
