LYNN – Trailing by two touchdowns late in the third quarter Friday night against Winthrop, St. Mary’s of Lynn teammates bombarded freshman Maxwell Parent with words of encouragement when he fumbled in the red zone.By the time Parent ran in his second touchdown of the fourth quarter to come back and tie the game with 2:14 left to play, though, they didn’t need to say a word to him as he prepared to kick the go-ahead extra-point attempt. He nailed it, capping off 15 unanswered points the defending Div. 6 state champion Spartans (2-0) used to complete a thrilling 15-14 comeback win over the Vikings (1-1) in nonleague action. Defense played a massive role, forcing four signature turnovers and a fourth-quarter safety to set up the game-winning score. The win is the 100th for St. Mary’s head coach Sean Driscoll.“I knew we always had it in us,” Parent said. “We (knew) what we needed to do, and we just needed to execute. And we (knew) we could do it.”“You saw a little test of wills, both ways...

Nico Hoerner’s base-stealing prowess is a weapon for the Chicago Cubs: ‘It’s a real skill,’ the 2nd baseman says

Published Mon, 13 Jan 2025 11:17:07 GMT

Nico Hoerner had never been much of a threat to steal a base, even in college. Now the Chicago Cubs second baseman is someone opposing teams must keep an eye on.With his swipe of second base in the fourth inning of Wednesday’s loss at Coors Field, Hoerner stole his 40th base of the season, something a Cub hadn’t done since Juan Pierre in 2006. The last Cubs second baseman to do it was Eric Young Sr. in 2000.Hoerner has displayed a rare combination of base stealing and run production. He is only the fifth Cubs player since 1901 to record at least 40 stolen bases and 60 RBIs and the first since Ryne Sandberg in 1985 (54 stolen bases and 83 RBIs). The others are Frank Chance (1903 and 1906), George Grantham (1923) and Kiki Culver (1929).“If you had told me I’d steal 40 bases in the big leagues a couple years ago, I probably wouldn’t really be pretty fired up,” Hoerner said. “It’s not something that I’ve always done at a super-high le...

At the city, we are trying to give them a place where they can utilize those advanced degrees, get re-credentialed, get accredited and then fill a lot of the vacant positions we have the city right now and get a really good stable job here in San Diego," said Minkoff.Minkoff said the city wanted to cater a career fair to immigrants and refugees because of the added challenges they face finding work.Anna Kopelzon and her family are starting a new life in San Diego, arriving less than two weeks ago fro...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A persistent error message greeted Dulce Martinez on Monday as she tried to access her casino rewards account to book accommodations for an upcoming business trip. That’s odd, she thought, then toggled over to Facebook to search for clues about the issue on a group for MGM Resorts International loyalty members. There, she learned that the largest casino owner in Las Vegas had fallen victim to a cybersecurity breach.Martinez, 45, immediately checked her bank statements for the credit card linked to her loyalty account. Now she was being greeted by four new transactions she did not recognize — charges that she said increased with each transaction, from $9.99 to $46. She canceled the credit card.Unsettled by the thought of what other information the hackers may have stolen, Martinez, a publicist from Los Angeles, said she signed up for a credit report monitoring program, which will cost her $20 monthly.“It’s been kind of an issue for me,” she said, “but I’m now mo...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was to travel to the far eastern port city of Vladivostok to see Russia’s Pacific fleet, while his official media back home said Saturday that he was “deeply impressed” by a factory producing the most advanced Russian warplanes. Kim’s trip to Russia, highlighted by a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, has sparked Western concerns about an arms alliance in which North Korean munitions fuel Putin’s war in Ukraine and Russian technologies advance the threat posed by Kim’s military nuclear program. After meeting with Putin at Russia’s main spaceport, a location that communicated Kim’s desire for Russian assistance in his efforts to acquire space-based reconnaissance assets and missile technologies, North Korea’s leader reappeared Friday in the far eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur for a visit to a plant producing Russia’s Su-57 fighter jets.Experts have said potential military cooperation betwe...
