Charles III crowned in ancient rite at Westminster Abbey LONDON (AP) — King Charles III was crowned Saturday at Westminster Abbey, receiving the bejeweled St. Edward’s Crown in a ceremony built on ancient traditions at a time when the monarchy is striving to remain relevant in a fractured modern Britain.Trumpets sounded inside the medieval abbey and the congregation shouted “God save the king!” at a ceremony attended by more than 2,000 guests, including world leaders, aristocrats and celebrities. Outside, thousands of troops, tens of thousands of spectators and a smattering of protesters converged. It was the culmination of a seven-decade journey for Charles from heir to monarch. To the royal family and government, the occasion — code-named Operation Golden Orb — was a display of heritage, tradition and spectacle unmatched around the world. The rite was expected to by watched by millions, though the awe and reverence the ceremony was designed to evoke are largely gone — and many greeted the day with a shr...

Bob Raissman: Brian Cashman forced to start selling hope as his battered Yankees sink in standings The effectiveness of Brian Cashman’s afternoon attempt to sell hope to the pinstriped masses, during a Stadium chat with notebooks and cameras, will ultimately be decided on the field and in a doctor’s office.Like most baseball impresarios, Cashman knows even if the stage is collapsing, the show must go on. No grand revelation there. Cashman must have realized the Knicks playoff run and the coming of high-profile Aaron Rodgers couldn’t provide cover for the Bombers inept play.“Don’t count us out,” Cashman, while selling inspiration too, told the assembled media seals. “Don’t give up on us …. It’s a championship-caliber operation.”The GM, in the first year of a four-year contract extension, also is the de facto producer, director, casting agent, promoter, of this Bombers production. A production that falls under the creative auspices of the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network. If the product YES is “selling...

W.Va. politicos keep fighting over 2020; voters, not so much CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Some Republican officeholders in West Virginia are already revving up campaigns for governor in 2024. But first, they have to sort out what happened in 2020.Years after Democrat Joe Biden was declared the White House winner, Secretary of State Mac Warner and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey say they remain concerned his victory was not legitimate. They persist in those views despite repeated investigations, audits and court cases concluding there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud or improper counting that could have changed the results in Donald Trump’s favor.Warner, who runs elections in West Virginia, toed the line for more than two years before going on a talk show this week to say he can “now firmly say” he believes the election was stolen. “That election was thrown, it was stolen, and we should not rest easy,” he said on Talk Radio WRNR in the state’s Eastern Panhandle. Asserting that the 2020 presidential race was stole...

A COVID legacy? When doctors say we should still be masking up Even before the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic was no longer a “public health emergency of international concern” on Friday, many Canadians had already given up wearing masks as mandates lifted in most public places.Although WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted Friday’s declaration “does not mean COVID-19 is over,” many people will likely interpret it that way, said Dr. Allison McGeer, infectious diseases specialist and microbiologist at Sinai Health Systems in Toronto.“Truthfully, at least in Canada, most behaviour is already reflecting most people’s opinion that the pandemic is over,” McGeer said.Still, infectious diseases specialists are hoping the practice of masking, which emerged in this country as a response to the pandemic, will continue at certain times and in certain places to help reduce the spread of not only COVID-19, but influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well.Alt...
