Men’s basketball: Gophers bounce back with 67-53 win over South Carolina-Upstate

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 07:03:00 GMT

Coach Ben Johnson acknowledges this year’s Gophers men’s basketball team is not going to routinely win by getting into offensive shootouts, but if it takes care of business in its own end, things could end like they did Saturday.Dawson Garcia scored a team-high 14 points, including a late 3-point play, and Minnesota did just enough offensively to beat South Carolina-Upstate 67-53 at Williams Arena.Mike Mitchell Jr., Joshua Ola-Joseph and Elijah Hawkins each had nine points in a balanced scoring attack. Pharrel Payne had seven points and tied a career high with four blocks.Minnesota (3-1) shot just 39.7% but scored 10 of the final 11 points and 14 of the final 21.“We can’t rely on making threes and making jump shots and scoring, you know, whatever it is, 89 points. That’s not a recipe for success. And so, we needed to find games where I kept telling them you have to win with your defense, we got to find ways to win with our defense, and I thought they really stepped...

Charley Walters: Vikings need to see more of Josh Dobbs before considering a contract

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 07:03:00 GMT

People who make decisions for the Vikings are naturally pleased with the quarterbacking of Josh Dobbs after two games, but also count coach Kevin O’Connell’s play-calling and direction for his success.Dobbs, 28, who is playing for $1.5 million, can become a free agent after the season. The Vikings understandably want a larger sample than two games before considering a new contract.Should Dobbs continue to excel, a new contract could be worth as much as $20 million a year. The Vikings also have the option of a franchise tag for him, but that cost would be prohibitive.— Despite his age (36 next August), if Kirk Cousins fully recovers from his Achilles tear and doesn’t receive an incentive-laden extension, he’ll be the the NFL’s top free agent QB in March. That could cost nearly $45 million a year guaranteed for two years.— Dobbs, much more mobile than Cousins, and Cousins, a better passer than Dobbs, have, coincidentally, the same agent, Mike McCartney.— The Vikings probably cannot af...

Theater Review: Guthrie’s “A Christmas Carol” lulls more than inspires

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 07:03:00 GMT

As the Guthrie Theater moves in on a half-century of annual adaptations of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” we can look back at productions that have ranged in quality from brilliant to perfunctory. At its best, it’s a heart-filling tale of transformation, full of energy and eye-popping design ideas. In its weakest incarnations, it carries an obligatory air, as if the cast understands it’s a cash cow intended to fund productions about which the company is considerably more excited.I certainly wouldn’t put the 2023 version down there with the least of the company’s “Carols,” but it certainly came off as a low-energy affair at Friday’s opening. It has little in the way of spark or sparkle, plodding along at an unvarying pace and lacking much in the way of charisma or colorful characterizations. Throw in the dim lighting and paucity of movement, and it’s a “Carol” that lulls more than inspires.Lavina Jadhwani’s adaptation is certainly not at fault, for the Guthrie debuted it last y...

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Blake Corum scored twice in the first half, Mike Sainristil intercepted two passes, and No. 2 Michigan —- playing again without suspended coach Jim Harbaugh — became the first college football program to win 1,000 games, beating Maryland 31-24 on Saturday. The Wolverines (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) remained unbeaten in their final tune-up before next weekend’s showdown against No. 3 Ohio State, but it wasn’t easy. Maryland (6-5, 3-5) rallied from a 23-3 second-quarter deficit and had the ball down five on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter. The last of those chances came after Tommy Doman’s punt pinned the Terrapins at their own 1-yard with 4:10 to play. Taulia Tagovailoa threw incomplete under pressure in the end zone, the ball falling well short of where receiver Tai Felton was. Officials conferred and called intentional grounding for a safety that made it 31-24 and gave the Wolverines the ball back.Corum converted a fourth-and-short run, and after a measureme...
