Read more Letters to the Editor.Texas abortion banlacks compassionRe: “Woman to leave Texas for abortion” (Page A1, Dec. 12).I am so outraged about the recent Texas abortion case that I feel compelled to write.During my long career as a neonatal nurse (now retired), I had the sad experience of taking care of a couple of trisomy 18 infants. Each survived only a few hours. This is a fatal anomaly, so what possible harm could there be in allowing an abortion in this case? And this doesn’t even include the woman’s maternal complications. Why do Texas politicians hate women so much and have so little compassion that they would not permit an abortion in such a case?I am so glad I live in California where the right to abortion is now enshrined in the state Constitution. Only women and their medical providers need to be making decisions regarding abortions.Peggy MoyersOaklandReagan’s ‘ideals’grew U.S. ...

Did Pamela Price recall group exploit Oakland officer’s murder with fundraising thread?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 20:57:29 GMT

A war of words between Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s campaign and the group pushing for her ouster has raised questions about the ethics of exploiting violence in Oakland for political purposes — and the increasingly tense recall effort. On Tuesday, Price’s “Protect the Win” campaign group put out a statement decrying the recall group’s “reprehensible” efforts to fundraise in the aftermath of Oakland Police Officer Tuan Le’s killing. In the statement, they condemned a thread on X, formerly Twitter, in which the Recall Pamela Price account said that Officer Tuan Le’s death underscored the need for “rescinding failed policies.”In a second post, the recall account shared a link to the group’s website, which highlights a $100,000 donation drive.Le, 36, was shot and killed near Oakland’s waterfront last Friday while working a plainclothes burglary-suppression detail.William Fitzgerald, a spokesperson for the Protect the Win campaign, s...

OAKLAND — A Stockton man who police have named as a suspect in the killing of Officer Tuan Le has a prior manslaughter conviction in connection with a 2014 shootout that killed an 18-year-old man, according to court documents and multiple law enforcement sources.Mark Demetrious Sanders, 27, was booked Tuesday into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of killing Le, pending a review by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office to potentially file charges. Police have identified Sanders as the man who allegedly opened fire into an unmarked police car containing Le, who was on an undercover detail monitoring a Dec. 29 early morning burglary in progress at a cannabis business. But court records show it’s not Sanders’ first time being arrested on suspicion of homicide. In April 2014, when Sanders was just 17, the U.S. Marshals arrested him in Modesto in connection with the killing of 18-year-old Marcellus Perry.Perry was killed during a February 2014 shootout near Banc...

USA Boxing new transgender athlete policy receives backlash

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 20:57:29 GMT

(NewsNation/KRON) — Updates to USA Boxing's rulebook have sparked criticism over the federation’s policy regarding transgender athletes. The policy was written in 2022 but added to the federation’s rulebook this week. It’s based on the November 2021 International Committee Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations. That framework allows the international federation for each sport to determine transgender athletes' eligibility.“Since boxing’s IF (International Federation) has not determined transgender eligibility and boxing is considered a combat sport, USA Boxing’s overriding objective is the safety of all boxers and fair competition between all boxers,” USA Boxing wrote in an August 2022 release.Per the federation’s policy, minors must compete as the gender assigned to them at birth. The new USA Boxing rule will allow transgender women boxers to compete with cisgender women, which received backlash from many professi...

(KRON) -- Scammers are targeting Marin County residents with bogus threats about failing to show up for jury duty. The Marin County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook Wednesday, "They are at it again! This time related to Jury Duty. We have had a rise in calls related to a phone scam, where someone pretends to be an MCSO staff member." The caller then demands money for a "fine," or demands payments via gift cards and other cashless forms of payment, MCSO wrote. "This is never something MCSO, or any other law enforcement agency, would do. Please don't fall victim to their threats," the Sheriff's Office warned. If you believe you fell victim to the scam, provided banking information, or suffered a financial loss, you are encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Office.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. They’re playing for a playoff spot right now, so I just think that with all of that on the table it would be a great feeling to end the season with a win in Lambeau up there.“We’re just going to take it day by day, worry about the rest of today and tomorrow, and of course leading up to Sunday get ready to play ball.”Fields didn’t mind stoking the flames of the rivalry a bit more.“It’s going to be a fun environment to walk into their home field,” Fields said. “I know their fans are going to be loud because there’s not much to do in Green Bay except watch footb...

Rams will sit Stafford, Kupp, Donald, Kyren in regular-season finale vs 49ers to rest for playoffs

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, Kyren Williams, Cooper Kupp and linebacker Ernest Jones will not play in the playoff-bound Los Angeles Rams’ regular-season finale at San Francisco.Carson Wentz will make his first start for the Rams (9-7) on Sunday, coach Sean McVay said Wednesday. Los Angeles also will be without Williams, the NFL’s second-leading rusher; Kupp, the Super Bowl 56 MVP; Donald, the seven-time All-Pro defensive lineman; and Jones, the Rams’ leading tackler.Tight end Tyler Higbee (dislocated shoulder) and swing tackle Joe Noteboom (plantar fascia) also will sit out Week 18 due to injury. The Rams have clinched their fifth playoff spot in McVay’s seven seasons, and earning a slightly higher seed clearly means little to the coach with most of the NFC playoff picture still in flux behind the top-seeded 49ers. Even beyond his resting stars, McVay made it clear he wants his key players to do as little as possible in a game with mi...
